Detroit, Michigan

Detroit, Michigan has a unique story: once the industrial heart of America, it faced severe economic and social challenges that nearly left it for dead. But today, the city is experiencing a remarkable resurgence, proudly displaying its historical grit and growing with fresh energy. On my recent trip to Detroit, I set out to explore the city’s rich past, creative spirit, and the many new things that make it worth visiting now.

Getting There and Getting Around

I flew First Class with American Airlines from New York City to Detroit, which was a short and comfortable flight. From Detroit Metro Airport, I rented a Jeep Compass through Turo, a car-sharing platform. Turo provided a convenient, no-hassle way to get a reliable vehicle without going through a traditional rental company, and the Jeep Compass was a solid choice for exploring the urban and suburban landscapes of Detroit.

Where I Stayed: MGM Grand Detroit Hotel & Casino

I chose the MGM Grand Detroit Hotel & Casino as my home base, staying in one of their Grand View Executive King Suites. The hotel’s central location made it easy to access many of Detroit’s main attractions, and the suite provided spacious comfort after long days of sightseeing. The hotel itself has plenty of amenities, including several restaurants, a casino, and a relaxing spa. It has a lively vibe, especially in the evenings, which reflects the energy of the city outside its doors.

The Resilient History of Detroit

Detroit’s story is rooted in industry. Once known as the “Motor City,” Detroit was the birthplace of the automotive industry, home to Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler. But the city went through hard times, especially in the late 20th century, with the decline of manufacturing and economic struggles that led to a mass exodus of residents. In 2013, Detroit became the largest city in the U.S. to file for bankruptcy.

However, things are changing. Today, Detroit is a city reborn. With renewed investment, redevelopment, and a creative community, Detroit is overcoming its challenges and building a fresh identity. The abandoned skyscrapers of the past are becoming new office spaces, apartments, and hotels. There’s an undeniable optimism in the air as you explore the city’s neighborhoods and landmarks.

Exploring Detroit: Must-Visit Sites

Detroit has a unique combination of historical attractions and animated art and cultural spaces. Here’s a rundown of some of the places I visited:

The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation

1. The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation

The Ford Museum, located just outside of Detroit in Dearborn, is a must-see for anyone interested in American history and technology. The museum covers everything from the early days of automotive innovation to the space age. It’s a hands-on, interactive experience that brings the past to life in a way that’s accessible and engaging for all ages.

One highlight was seeing the actual Rosa Parks Bus, preserved as a powerful symbol of the Civil Rights Movement. Sitting on the bus where Rosa Parks made her courageous stand against segregation was a moving experience that connected me to a pivotal moment in history.

2. The Motown Museum

Located in the original house where Motown Records was founded, the Motown Museum captures the musical history that helped define Detroit. Standing in Studio A, where legends like Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, and Marvin Gaye recorded some of their biggest hits, was surreal. The museum does a fantastic job of immersing you in the Motown era, sharing stories and memorabilia that showcase the immense cultural impact of Motown music.

The Heidelberg Project

One of Detroit’s most unique art installations, The Heidelberg Project, transforms an ordinary neighborhood into an outdoor art gallery. The artist, Tyree Guyton, used found objects to create colorful, meaningful displays that comment on Detroit’s challenges and resilience. The project makes you think about the potential for art to inspire and provoke change. It’s definitely worth exploring if you want to see a different, more experimental side of Detroit.

4. Belle Isle Park

Belle Isle is a beautiful island park on the Detroit River that offers a bit of everything: nature, history, and recreation. The park’s aquarium and conservatory are both worth a visit, and you’ll find excellent views of both Detroit and Windsor, Canada, across the river. On a nice day, it’s a perfect place for a stroll or picnic, and it’s one of Detroit’s best green spaces.

5. The GM Renaissance Center and Detroit Riverwalk

The GM Ren Center, or Renaissance Center, is a Detroit icon on the riverfront. This cluster of skyscrapers includes offices, shops, and dining, as well as a spectacular riverwalk with scenic views. On the 71st floor of the Ren Center is the Highlands Bar & Restaurant, a stylish spot for dinner or drinks with a view. Watching the sun set over Detroit from this height was a great way to see the city from a different perspective.

While I covered some of Detroit’s best-known spots, there are plenty of other places to explore:

Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA): Known for its world-class art collection and Diego Rivera murals.

Eastern Market: A bustling market with local vendors and food stalls, offering a taste of Detroit’s culinary scene.

Fox Theatre: A historic venue with a beautiful interior, hosting concerts, shows, and other performances.

Kosher Dining Options North of Detroit

For kosher travelers, there are several great dining options about 20 minutes north of Detroit. I visited a few of them:

Kravings: A kosher meat grill that serves up burgers, steaks, and more.

Jerusalem Pizza & Bagel: A dairy spot for pizza, bagels, and salads.

Prime 10: A kosher steakhouse with a modern, upscale feel.

Spreads Kosher Bagels and Café: A great place to grab breakfast or lunch, with a nice selection of bagels and deli items.

Wok in Cari Out: Kosher Chinese food that offers takeout and delivery options.

The Grove: A kosher supermarket with an extensive selection, making it easy to stock up on groceries if you’re staying in the area.

Whether you’re interested in American history, innovative art, or simply looking to explore a place with a unique spirit, Detroit has something to offer. I left Detroit with a new appreciation for its resilience and its commitment to creating a brighter future.
