A friend and I recently visited Patis, a kosher bakery and café chain in New York City. Renowned for its artisan baking, we ate at the 676 Amsterdam Avenue location on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. There are currently 14 locations in the New York City Area, including, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Long Island and New Jersey. Patis stands as a testament to the fusion of European and American baking techniques, offering a unique and unforgettable taste experience.

“Patis is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to indulge in the heart of artisan baking.”

Upon entering the café, the ambiance hinted at the sophisticated yet welcoming experience ahead. The place prides itself on being a "sanctuary for pastry enthusiasts," and it lived up to this claim. The variety of baked goods on display, from croissants to desserts, was not only a feast for the eyes but also promised an indulgent adventure for the palate. Patis boasts a diverse menu that caters to both dairy and dairy-free preferences, embodying the essence of artisan baking where every bite tells a story of passion, craftsmanship, and innovation.

For our meal, I opted for the Avocado Toast, which presented an interesting choice between Country White, Multigrain, or Croissant. I chose the Multigrain option, intrigued by the combination of Feta, Radish, Pickled Onions, Pumpkin Seeds, and Tomato. It was served with a side salad, providing a fresh contrast to the rich flavors of the toast. The avocado toast at Patis was a delightful experience, offering a balance of textures and flavors that was both satisfying and refreshing.

My friend chose the Shakshouka, a popular Middle Eastern dish that has found a special place in Israeli cuisine. The dish consisted of two eggs poached in a vibrant tomato and pepper sauce, accompanied by Ricotta cheese, a side salad, home fries, and toasted sourdough. Shakshouka, originally from North Africa, has become a staple in Israeli breakfasts and brunches, known for its comforting warmth and depth of flavor. The version served at Patis was authentic and heartwarming, capturing the essence of this beloved dish.

For dessert, we indulged in a Danish and the Dulce De Leche Kouign Amann. The latter, a masterpiece of buttery, flaky croissant dough filled with dulce de leche, topped with chantilly cream, and a dulce de leche drizzle, was an absolute delight. The complexity of textures and the harmony of flavors in the Kouign Amann was a testament to the innovative spirit of Patis. Paired with their robust coffee, the desserts rounded off the meal on a high note.

The menu at Patis Bakery offers a comprehensive selection of breakfast items, pizzas, pastas, paninis, sandwiches, salads, soups, pastries, specialty lattes, classic drinks, signature frappes, dairy-free breads, and grab 'n go options, catering to a variety of tastes and dietary preferences. Breakfast highlights include customizable eggs with choices of toast and cheese, alongside innovative breakfast sandwiches such as the Pepper & Egg on Ciabatta. The pizza section features a sourdough base with options like the classic Margherita and a unique Mushroom Pizza with herbed goat cheese and truffle butter. Pasta is represented by a kid-friendly Mac & Cheese.

Paninis and presses offer savory selections like the Tuna Melt and the Melting Cow with a mix of cheeses and truffle butter, each served with a side salad. Sandwich options range from an Impossible Burger to an Avocado Toast with a variety of toppings and bread choices. Salads include the Beet Salad, Caesar Salad, and a customizable option, ensuring fresh and healthy choices. Soups like Potato Leek and Soupe Au Pistou provide comfort in a bowl.

The pastry section includes items such as the Almond Croissant showcasing the bakery's artisanal skills. Specialty lattes and classic drinks like the Caramel Mac and Americano cater to coffee lovers, while signature frappes offer a chilled, indulgent beverage option. For those seeking dairy-free options, a variety of sourdough breads, including Kalamata Olive and Cranberry Pecan, are available. The menu also features convenient grab 'n go options like the Fresh Fruit Yogurt Parfait, alongside a selection of beverages including Coke, Diet Coke, and Poland Spring Water, ensuring a well-rounded offering for all patrons.

While the food and the coffee were exceptional, one aspect that could enhance the dining experience at Patis is the presentation. Serving the meticulously prepared dishes on real plates rather than disposable ones would elevate the overall experience, ensuring that the presentation matches the high quality of the food. This change would not only reflect the cafe's commitment to artisan baking but also add an element of elegance to the dining experience.

My visit to Patis was a memorable journey through the art of baking. The café's commitment to quality, innovation, and honoring kosher principles, including mashgiach timidi, kemach yoshon, pas yisrael, and chalav yisrael, is commendable. Every creation at Patis not only delights the senses but also pays homage to baking traditions while pushing the boundaries of culinary artistry. Patis is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to indulge in the heart of artisan baking.
